These systems all use the new refrigerant, R410A, mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2010 for use in the U.S. because it does not contribute to depletion of the ozone layer. Units that use the old R-22 refrigerant are no longer being produced or sold.

A word about SEER ratings: The SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) is a standard developed by the U.S. government and equipment manufacturer's to indicate energy efficiency. The lower the S.E.E.R. rating, the more electricity is needed for heating or cooling.

Amana

Amana Equipment is just the ticket for those who need an extremely energy-efficient unit without the huge price tag. These systems are all R410A units. Sizes range from 1.5 ton to 5 ton with a rating of up to 18 SEER on both straight-cool and heat-pump models. These units feature variable-speed air handlers for better humidity control, and Copeland variable-speed scroll compressors. All Amana equipment is backed by a 10-year limited factory warranty on all parts. The 16 and 18 SEER models feature a lifetime limited warranty on the compressor.
